I have used the date 29 September 1973 here in a tentative fashion and simply because there were more hours in the morning of 29 September 1973 before Auden's body was discovered than there were hours in the night of 28 September 1973 after he was last seen. Thus, all other things being equal, the balance of probability suggests he died on 29 September 1973.

Death

Like his mother, Auden died of a heart-attack suffered while asleep. It is impossible to give the date of his death with certainty. All that is known beyond doubt is that he died at some time during the night of 28-29 September 1973. I have used the date 29 September 1973 here in a tentative fashion and simply because there were more hours in the morning of 29 September 1973 before Auden's body was discovered than there were hours in the night of 28 September 1973 after he was last seen.
